Welcome and Services Overview
Thank you for considering Your Home Expert for your home repair and improvement needs.
MY SERVICE
I provide expert home repair, improvement, and consulting services—handling everything from simple fixes to complex, multi-trade projects. I take on a wide range of home-related challenges, offering second opinions and guidance on work done by other trades when needed.
I enjoy projects that involve a bit of everything—repairs across trades, thoughtful alterations, and small additions like bathrooms, kitchens, or decks. As a solo operator, I focus on work that’s a good fit for one skilled professional—projects that benefit from careful planning, efficiency, and hands-on problem-solving. I also take on smaller tasks such as installing outlets, appliances, or plumbing fixtures.
ABOUT ME
With over 35 years in construction and 13 years managing a restaurant, my background blends technical know-how, leadership, and a strong commitment to quality. I began my career in Germany with a 3½-year apprenticeship in custom cabinetry before co-founding BAUwerk Inc. – Design & Build in Berkeley, CA.
Over the years, I’ve led major home improvements, lot developments, and even built two restaurants for my wife.
After running BAUwerk Inc. for more than two decades, I shifted focus to co-own and operate a restaurant—an experience that sharpened my skills in operations, organization, and customer service. In 2024, after selling the business, I returned to construction and launched Your Home Expert.
Working independently allows me to give each project my full attention, drawing on years of experience to make smart material choices and adapt creatively when challenges arise. I enjoy working with my hands, troubleshooting, and seeing tangible results. What I appreciate most is the direct connection with homeowners—the day-to-day conversations, the mutual trust, and the satisfaction of getting things working, finished, or simply done right.
SKILLS
- Expert Carpenter & Skilled Craftsman: Proficient across multiple trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, restoration, concrete, painting, and heating.
- Quality Control & Problem Resolution: Skilled at troubleshooting, minimizing rework, and delivering clean, dependable results.
- Crew & Subcontractor Supervision: Experienced in coordinating professionals and maintaining quality standards.
- Product Research & Cost Optimization: Knowledgeable in sourcing materials and tools that offer the best balance of performance and value.
- Consulting & Recommendations: Offering practical guidance, second opinions, and tailored solutions for repairs and upgrades.
MY PROCESS
- Working Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
- Project Start: For new clients, I usually begin with a brief, no-charge introductory visit. This allows us to meet, discuss the scope, and decide if the project is a good match for my expertise. I keep this visit informal—no photos, measurements, or in-depth analysis—just a conversation to see if it feels like a fit. If we decide to move forward, this time may be added to the billable hours; if not, the visit remains free of charge.
- Storage Needs: For larger jobs, it’s helpful to have at least 4 × 6 feet of secure indoor space for tools and materials. If that’s not available, my daily clock-in may begin at my Emeryville workshop, depending on what’s needed that day.
- Digital Time Recording: Time is tracked via mobile app and typically begins at the job site. It may also begin from my Emeryville shop or a vendor location, depending on material pickups or tool needs.
- Clarification: My strength is in working across multiple trades rather than specializing in one. For example, I can paint or troubleshoot electrical issues, but I’m not a full-time painter or licensed electrician.
PRICING AND PAYMENT
- Initial Charge (2-hour minimum): $240 for the first two hours. After that, the hourly rate is $85. Emergency calls outside regular hours are billed at the same minimum rate.
- Material Purchase: A 15% markup applies to materials purchased through my account (e.g., hardware, lumber, paint). Larger or specialty items—such as appliances, fixtures, or tile—are typically purchased directly by the customer, with my guidance.
- Payment Terms & Invoicing: No payment is requested up front. Invoices are submitted promptly by email and include detailed timesheets and any refundable receipts. Larger projects are invoiced bi-weekly.
- Accepted Payment Methods: Cash, check, or Zelle
I look forward to working with you to improve, update, or repair your home.
